But even better: the government is stable and enlightened, and its standards of health and education are just about the highest on the continent. All this despite its being largely undeveloped in terms of road infrastructure. Botswana is an unspoiled land of savannahs and deserts, with wetlands in the east. The people raise cattle and conduct subsistence-level farming; a large portion of people are unemployed and there is the highest rate of HIV/AIDS infection in the world. The government's efforts to attract tourists who are big spenders means excellent availability of travel experiences, and budget tourism is growing.
