The last Buddhist Himalayan state, Bhutan is a land-locked Himalayan kingdom, now becoming a constitutional monarchy. Facilities for tourism are limited; and it is important to remember that this part of the world is a trouble-spot; approximately 100,000 Bhutanese refugees living in Nepal. But since it opened itself to visitors in 1974, Bhutan has welcomed and awed visitors with its landscape, architecture, and the unspoiled charm and goodness of its people. Bhutan is one of Asia's poorest countries, but has tremendous economic potential of various sorts, including export of spices and precious gems. Western Bhutan, with the country's main cities and most of its people, is most popular with visitors. The area has steep hills, lush valleys and winding rivers. Tourists visit central Bhutan, excellent trekking land, to see the Buddhist monasteries. Eastern Bhutan has lower altitudes and a warmer climate (best to visit in the winter), and is worth seeing for its textiles.
